In Mexico there are different creole avocado genotypes with high genetic, cultural, and nutritional value. In Parras, Coahuila, the population of creole avocado trees is famous for its flavor and rusticity. This could serve as a source of germplasm, however, there are no scientific studies on its morphology and genetic diversity that establish its genetic value. In this study, thirteen creole avocado trees were sampled. The morphometric characteristics of the fruits and the tree were evaluated. Likewise, their genetic diversity was determined using Inter-Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR) as molecular markers. Trees showed variations in size, tree shape, girth, branching pattern, and leaf shape. The fruits also presented various morphological differences in size, shape, and seed. When performing a principal component analysis based on these morphological variables, a strong association between seed size and fruit cavity was observed. On the other hand, the population of creole avocado trees presented a genetic diversity of 0.27 and 78% of the loci analyzed presented polymorphisms. In addition, the structure of the population was analyzed using the STRUCTURE program, showing that the trees are grouped into two subpopulations. In conclusion, the creole avocado trees in Parras, Coahuila present high genetic variability, being good candidates as a source of germplasm due to their high genetic value.
