Allergic rhinitis (AR) is an atopic IgE-mediated disease associated with allergens such as pollen, dust mites, and molds, with symptoms including nasal congestion, sneezing, itching, and issues with sleep, attention, and hearing, particularly affecting children. AR in genetically predisposed individuals is linked to environmental factors, such as dust and pollen; however, nutritional status and physical activity may also significantly influence its development. Diets high in fats and low in carbohydrates increase the AR risk, whereas a vegetable-rich diet may reduce it. The dietary inflammatory index (DII) assesses the inflammatory potential of foods, and previous studies suggest that pro-inflammatory diets increase the risk of AR. This pilot study, conducted in Hermosillo, Sonora, evaluated the nutritional status, physical activity, and diet of children aged 3 to 12 years with and without AR, using anthropometric measurements and 24-h dietary recalls. Children with AR showed higher prevalence of overweight, obesity, and abdominal obesity and were also more sedentary. Both groups exceeded recommendations for saturated fat intake and consumption of animal-based foods, while their intake of legumes, fruits, and vegetables was low. This pro-inflammatory dietary profile could contribute to the risk and prevalence of AR.
